Oracle is expanding tape library options for midsize companies with Wednesday's launch of the StorageTek SL150.

Part of the StorageTeck Modular Library line, SL150 is the company's answer to two big challenges that data-rich business environments face today, said Tom Wultich, director of Tape Product Management for Oracle. "Data growth," he informed, "not only is it high, it's not predictable."

Equally critical is the effect on IT budgets. "Budgets aren't growing with data growth," observed Wultich. For its new StorageTek SL150 tape library, Oracle took a customer installable and upgradable approach to engineering a tape storage system that grows with an organization's backup and archival needs.

The SL150 can scale from an initial configuration of 30 tape slots in a 3U library to a total of 300 slots by adding up to nine 2U 30-slot expansion units. In total, a fully populated system can handle up to 900 TB of LTO-5 tape capacity using 2:1 compression or 450 TB uncompressed. The library has a maximum throughput rating of 10 TB per hour using 20 tape drives to transfer uncompressed data.

The system is also "the first to use half-height drives," said Wultich, contributing to a space-saving design that helps the library achieve 40 percent higher density than comparable systems. "As you scale, the costs get less expensive," he added. All told, the SL150 costs up to 75 percent less to acquire than competing midrange tape libraries, claims the company.

Oracle has also made it a point to ease deployment, particularly for businesses whose IT resources are as tight as their budgets. Installation times are brisk, taking as little as 30 minutes, according to the company.

Configuring the library and expanding storage capacity is a similarly quick affair thanks to USB-based auto-discovery features. A built-in, full-color touch screen panel provides IT administrators with a wizard-driven GUI that turns setup tasks into a four-step process.

As expected, the StorageTek SL150 tape library blends seamlessly into Oracle environments with support for the company's 11g Recovery Manager and Secure Backup offerings. The system also supports StorageTek Automated Cartridge System Library Software, Sun Storage Archive Manager and StorageTek Tape Analytics. Worry not, said Wultich, third-party platforms can fully interface with the hardware.

The StorageTek SL150 Modular Tape Library is available for order now.
