IBM and IT distributor Tech Data have teamed to provide midsized businesses with integrated, virtualization-friendly backup systems.

Dubbed the Tech Data Integrated Data Protection Solution, the product combines IBM's PowerLinux servers, V3700 Storwize disk arrays and the SMB-flavored Entry edition of the tech company's Tivoli Storage Manager software. The bundle, exclusive to Tech Data, is targeted at businesses seeking a one-stop solution for their data backup requirements.

IBM PowerLinux systems are based on the company's Power architecture, an alternative to x86-based servers. Storwize V3700 is IBM's entry level, dual controller block storage system for small and midsized organizations. Highlights include built-in internal storage virtualization, thin provisioning and FlashCopy, the latter of which creates a near-instant copy of active data for additional processing or incremental snapshots.

Tivoli Storage Manager Entry delivers automated storage tiering and provisioning capabilities, along with cloud API support. Real-time Compression, an optional IBM technology, enables further storage efficiency. VMware integration allows for VM storage management via VMware's native toolset.

Taken altogether, the integrated backup solution can have major cost-savings benefits for SMBs, according to Tech Data.

The company estimates that the single-SKU offering can slash backup infrastructure costs for organizations by up to 38 percent. And backups take up less disk space, courtesy of Tivoli Storage Manager. Tests have shown that the software's built-in deduplication and "incremental forever" backup features can cut backup storage requirements by up to a whopping 95 percent in virtualized environments.

Connie Noyes, director of Product Marketing, Tech Data's IBM Solutions Group, said in a statement that the new offering "provides a simple way for solution providers and their customers to deploy modernized data protection using integrated IBM products." It helps fledgling enterprises "improve IT efficiency and meet the rapidly growing demands for modernized backup and recovery solutions," she said.

Tech Data's backup bundle brings enterprise-grade storage management within reach of SMB IT budgets, said IBM Software Sales vice president David A. Wilson. "Using IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager Entry product allows Tech Data to offer a solution with the same features and functions offered by the full suite of Tivoli Storage Manager Software, but at an attractive price point for smaller storage environments."
