Business Briefs

The Eclipse Foundation, an open source community, recently approved the creation of the Aperi Storage Management Framework Project. The Aperi Project, which was proposed in June 2006, will give users more choices for deploying storage infrastructure software. The Aperi group includes 10 vendors-Brocade, CA, Cisco, Emulex, Fujitsu Ltd., IBM, LSI Logic, McData, Network Appliance, and Novell-that are building a common platform for storage management.

Onaro announced the availability of Service Connect, a Web services API that enables application providers and internal development teams to gain access to service-related data in Onaro’s SANscreen. Users of the API can provide SANscreen’s storage service insight to their storage and infrastructure management applications. Cisco and Hitachi Data Systems have joined the program and will be able to use the SANscreen Service Connect API.

Bell Microproducts and Tek-Tools have teamed to offer a storage assessment program designed to help IT managers plan and/or re-allocate storage. The storage assessment program collects storage data and provides details on its usage patterns.

Hitachi Data Systems has added Brocade’s 4Gbps SilkWorm 48000 director and SilkWorm 200E switch to its portfolio, which also includes the midrange SilkWorm 4100 switch.

Softek Storage Solutions’ open systems data migration and replication software has completed interoperability testing with IBM’s System Storage products.

Dell and EMC recently announced a five-year extension of their global alliance, through 2011.

Topio has established a reseller partnership with Sirius Computer Solutions for the Topio Data Protection Suite (TDPS). Topio’s software provides Sirius customers with the ability to replicate data between any storage systems.

QLogic’s SANbox Fibre Channel switches and SANblade HBAs have completed qualification testing in the Symantec Technology Enabled Program (STEP) for Veritas Storage Foundation 5.0, the next generation of Symantec’s storage management and virtualization technology.

Emulex is in the process of acquiring Sierra Logic, a provider of embedded ASIC components and firmware. The acquisition expands Emulex’ position in the market for embedded multi-protocol storage products. Sierra Logic’s current product portfolio, which includes embedded bridges and routers, enables connectivity of low-cost Serial ATA (SATA) disk drives within Fibre Channel-based enterprise storage systems. In other news, Emulex’ SMI-S-compliant LightPulse family of HBAs for Windows and Linux is fully tested and certified for use with the new HP Systems Insight Manager (SIM) 5.0 software.
