Start-up claims 11,000 IOPS By Kevin Komiega April 1, 2008—Atrato recently launched the Velocity1000 (V1000) storage system, the company's first product aimed at high-speed, high-volume I/O processing for high-performance computing (HPC) and digital entertainment applications. The V1000 is a high-density system that combines hundreds of identical disk drives and data acceleration features to deliver more than 11,000 I/Os per second (IOPS) in random reads/writes, or up to 3,600 simultaneous standard-definition data streams. The key to the V1000's design is its Self-maintaining Array of Identical Disks (SAID), which provides reliable operation at low cost and low power dissipation, according to Steve Visconti, Atrato's executive vice president of sales and marketing. The system provides 25.6TB to 50TB of capacity in a 3U form factor using 2.5-inch mobile-class disk drives. The V1000 is a sealed box and, Visconti claims, never needs maintenance. The company guarantees the system's operation and reliability for more than three years without disruption because it is equipped with physical and virtual drive spares and software that can detect potential drive failures and conduct rebuilds in the background in advance of a drive crash. "We have achieved zero service interruption by doing extensive Q&A testing on the hard drives. Everything has quadruple redundancy, and the worst-case scenario would be diminished performance," says Visconti. The company claims the traditional over-allocation of storage fails to deliver performance and also taxes power and cooling resources as well as space limitations. Visconti says the V1000's design provides better performance than traditional filers, caching systems, and disk arrays. "Our design concept was to develop a product that provides the highest I/O performance in packaging that reduces overall footprint and cost," says Visconti. He claims the V1000 saves 50% of operating costs and uses 80% less power compared to some existing storage systems. The V1000 supports RAID 5, 6, 10, and 50 and integrates virtualization software to eliminate any single point of failure. The system also features fault detection, isolation, and data recovery with predictive failure and auto-rebuild disk management. According to Visconti, the starting price for the V1000 is in the "very-low six digits." Page 1 of 1
