April 22, 2008—CommVault today announced that it has entered into a strategic partnership with Index Engines to jointly offer users a new way to extract and process information from legacy backup tapes using CommVault's Simpana 7.0 data protection software.
The companies hope the partnership and the joint offering will attract new customers that believe they are tied to legacy backup systems for the recovery of older information stored on tape.
Index Engines' discovery platform is able to natively extract files and e-mail from legacy tape backups. Once accessed, data on backup tapes can then be cataloged, indexed, culled, de-duplicated, and searched. Once the information is identified and extracted from tape, it can then be processed using CommVault's Simpana software for long-term storage and management.
CommVault recently announced a round of new features and enhancements for Simpana 7.0, including advanced eDiscovery/Legal Hold capabilities, enhanced remote office data protection with disk-based backup and archive, broadened storage resource management (SRM) capabilities, as well as extended support for certain Microsoft applications.
The eDiscovery/Legal Hold capabilities produce new search result views that provide virtual working collections of search hits, allowing users to utilize annotation tags and organize search results. The feature also applies filters that reduce the number of files and e-mail messages needed for review. Additionally, new usability features let users save queries and control how results are displayed.
The remote office data-protection upgrades are specific to CommVault's Continuous Data Replicator (CDR) tool, which combines replication with the bandwidth efficiencies and disk savings of single instance storage (SIS) for backup and archive data. Simpana 7.0 now transfers only de-duplicated data in an effort to expedite the process of copying backup or archive data to a central location over a WAN or a LAN for secondary processing.
Additions to CommVault's Storage Manager 7.0 SRM tool include support for more operating systems and new features that automate the identification of different data types, growth trends, and cost metrics across heterogeneous environments. The new management features give users the ability to administer storage pools, allocate new volumes when necessary, and forecast disk/tape growth and purchases for business cost savings.
CommVault has added support for Windows Server 2008 as well as new flavors of Linux and Unix, allowing Simpana 7.0 users to restore files from earlier versions of the operating systems.
According to CommVault's vice president of marketing and business development, Dave West, users are demanding the integration of SRM functions into the data movement process.
"SRM tools are typically stand-alone products from hardware vendors and they're good tools, but the technology must be integrated into the data movement process," says West. "Once you can identify and analyze what you have out there, you can then do something with that information. The combination of these two technologies is where you will see the real benefits."
