Caringo teams with Moonwalk for CAS migration

By Kevin Komiega

April 30, 2008—Storage management software maker Moonwalk has joined forces with content-addressed storage (CAS) specialist Caringo to offer end users a heterogeneous solution for migrating data from proprietary hardware systems to Caringo's CAStor archiving platform.

The joint solution, announced this week, uses Moonwalk's data management and migration engine to move data from primary storage volumes, file shares, and other CAS archives to a CAStor environment built around commodity hardware.

CAStor's single-tier architecture treats all disks in a CAStor cluster as primary storage while delivering all the attributes of an archive. The result is a scalable clustered storage environment with the cost efficiencies of secondary storage, the high-performance of primary storage, and integrity for compliance archiving, according to Moonwalk's CEO Peter Harvey.

"We are vendor-agnostic and so is CAStor. When you put the two technologies together you have a solution for managing data and feeding it to CAStor for long-term data retention," he says. "This approach can have a profound effect on the cost of data management and storage when compared to larger systems currently available today."

The Moonwalk software migrates, copies, and moves data according to user-defined rules and policies based on criteria such as age, size, file type, and file name. Moonwalk operates across and between all major file systems, including Windows, Unix, Linux, and NetWare environments, and all primary and secondary storage environments and is transparent to users and applications.

Caringo's CAStor technology runs on standard, commodity x86 hardware and provides write-once, read-many (WORM) storage, content integrity, and authenticity to meet regulatory requirements outlined in mandates such as SEC17a4 and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Harvey says the Moonwalk-Caringo combination can cut storage costs by avoiding vendor lock-in.

"We really don't care when new hardware devices come along. Caringo and Moonwalk have both embraced a vendor-agnostic approach, freeing customers from the dependency and extra costs of proprietary approaches to storage," he says. "Technologies will keep changing. The key to remaining agile as a business is to have a data management and archiving environment that does not lock you in to any one technology."
