Mimosa ships file system archiving platform

By Kevin Komiega

May 5, 2008—Mimosa Systems is branching out. The company, known primarily for e-mail and instant-message (IM) archiving products, will announce tomorrow the NearPoint File System Archiving (FSA) system, an addition to its product family designed to archive file content for enterprise customers.

The NearPoint FSA hooks into Mimosa's existing e-mail and IM archiving products to create a single, unified repository for the long-term retention of multiple content types. The result is an archive that provides storage, retrieval, and recovery of unstructured data, e-mails, attachments, IMs, and content from backup tapes.

NearPoint FSA moves files from high-priced production storage to lower-cost archive storage and uses stubbing technology that coordinates the use of network and backup processes while preserving the look and feel of the original file that was stored on primary disk. Users can then access archived files as they normally would as if they were stored on production systems.

The FSA also helps legal staffs with tools that can search both files and e-mail with a single search query, and export those files to analytics applications.

"The FSA crawls file systems and file shares based on policies and targets configured by administrators. It then archives and indexes data to make it searchable," says T.M. Ravi, Mimosa's president, CEO, and co-founder. "The FSA addresses retention management and reduces the burden on production storage by archiving data and enabling information lifecycle management."

Ravi claims that the FSA system one-ups competing solutions such as Symantec's Enterprise Vault and EMC's DiskXtender by providing a single, unified archive repository with a single set of de-duplication, monitoring, and movement applications that can be applied across multiple content types.

"We provide one repository for e-mail, IMs, files, documents, and other content types, and users can enforce unified policies on content no matter where it comes from," says Ravi.
