IBM will combine its server and data storage units into a single operating entity to promote its storage line. Separately, IBM has signed a definitive agreement with Ottawa, Canada-based Tarian Software—a provider of e-Records management software—to acquire all assets of the company.

Network Engineers has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire TidalWire, in a transaction worth approximately $20 million. The combined company is expected to specialize in the development, manufacture, and distribution of server appliance and complementary components for storage, security, and network management applications.

Auspex Systems announced a reseller agreement authorizing StorageTek Canada, a subsidiary of StorageTek, to market the Auspex NSc3000 network storage controller in conjunction with StorageTek disk products. The agreement equips StorageTek Canada with an enterprise-class file-serving platform for its D-Series disk storage subsystems for SANs. This agreement follows the joint certification of the NSc3000 with the StorageTek D-Series, recently announced by Auspex and StorageTek.

Veritas Software has acquired the Storage Reporter storage management software product line from privately held NTP Software. The software allows companies to make better sense of what types of files are filling up their storage.

Computer Associates announced the general availability of Version 9 of BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows, its data-protection solution.

EMC has extended its E-Lab qualification of Emulex's LightPulse LP9802 and LP982 PCI-X HBAs for use with its enterprise storage systems. New qualifications include the Emulex LP9802 for use with Symmetrix and Clariion networked storage systems in Solaris environments, as well as Clariion used in Linux environments. The LP982 has also been qualified as E-Lab Tested and is available for use with EMC Clariion networked storage systems in Linux environments.

Akara's storage-over-SONET products have been qualified by EMC as E-Lab Tested. Enterprises using EMC business continuity software now have immediate access to an alternative remote MAN/WAN connectivity capability for storage solutions.

LSI Logic Storage Systems is demonstrating how native iSCSI technology embedded in LSI Logic's storage, using Agilent Technologies' IP storage adapter, advances iSCSI performance to new levels using fewer components.

Gadzoox Networks announced a licensing agreement with Trebia Networks for storage networking applications, for Gadzoox Networks' FabriCore Engines Open SAN OS.

Correction
In the October 2002 issue (see Analyst View, "Managing storage: A plan of attack," p. 40), the business management section contains an incorrect statement about SSP models. The sentence should read: And it is this same SSP business model—often referred to as the storage utility—that many enterprise IT managers are now trying to reproduce inside their own enterprises.
