  • The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) announced that its Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S) has been designated an International Standard by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). SNIA officials hope the ISO's recognition of SMI-S will boost adoption of the management standard worldwide.

Matt Brisse, vice chair of the SNIA Executive Board and chairman of the SNIA standards committee, has high hopes for SMI-S on the international stage. "We believe this will help increase the adoption of SMI-S around the world. ISO standards are the de facto standards internationally and corporate policies sometimes mandate the adoption of ISO standards," says Brisse.

According to SNIA, more than 450 storage hardware and software products from 24 different companies have passed the SMI-S certification test program. SNIA is currently pushing SMI-S version 1.1 through the standards pipeline, with version 1.2 set to eventually follow the same course.
