—EMC introduced the least-expensive member of its Clariion CX line of midrange disk arrays this week with the Clariion CX3-10 UltraScale networked storage system.

The CX3-10 comes with 4Gbps Fibre Channel and iSCSI connectivity, replication software, and a range of software tools for consolidation, backup, and archiving.

In an effort to lure users deploying networked storage for the first time, EMC officials note that customers can use iSCSI for applications such as Microsoft Exchange and can use Fibre Channel for more bandwidth-intensive applications such as data warehouses built on Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server databases.

The Clariion CX3-10 FC/iSCSI system scales up to 30TB with Fibre Channel or SATA disk drives and supports all Clariion software, including data management, replication, and data mobility. The CX3-10 array also uses the Navisphere management software, including Navisphere Task Bar, Quality of Service Manager, and Virtual LUN technology.

Katie Curtin-Mestre, director of Clariion software marketing, says support for both iSCSI and Fibre Channel will be standard on all CX3-10 systems. "iSCSI is an important technology for mid-sized enterprises that are making the transition to networked storage. The combination of Fibre Channel and iSCSI gives them flexibility," she says.

EMC is also offering an asynchronous replication option for the CX3-10 in Windows environments via its RecoverPoint/SE software, which is based on technology acquired when EMC purchased replication vendor Kashya last year.

RecoverPoint/SE enables network-based replication between any two Clariion CX or CX3 UltraScale systems. The software provides point-in-time recovery of data from events such as database corruption, server failures, software errors, viruses, user errors, and other events.

With RecoverPoint/SE, Clariion users can define policies to manage their recovery time objectives across a wide range of applications from a single interface. In addition, RecoverPoint/SE offers recovery of related Windows applications such as Exchange and SQL Server, enabling organizations to restart applications from the same point in time.

EMC is also offering a set of free Reference Architectures and Assessment Services for Microsoft Exchange 2003, SQL Server 2005, and Oracle RAC 10g. The services provide EMC partners and customers with documented blueprints and best practices for implementing consolidation, backup, and disaster-recovery solutions.

The Clariion CX3-10 with Fibre Channel and iSCSI connectivity is priced from $27,000.
