Sepaton launches enterprise VTL

Sepaton’s recently announced S2100-ES2 Series 750 virtual tape library (VTL) features twice the throughput and more usable capacity than the company’s existing high-end VTL and includes DeltaStor de-duplication software to let users store more data in less physical space.

The S2100-ES2 VTL scales to 1.2PB of uncompressed capacity, with performance of up to 9600MBps, according to company officials. The ES2 compresses data without impacting performance, allowing it to perform backups and restores at a rate of 34.5TB per hour. The ES2 also supports up to 16 of Sepaton’s Scalable Replication Engine (SRE) nodes per VTL. Each node supports two 2Gbps or 4Gbps Fibre Channel host connections, for up to 600MBps per node. Also new to the 750 Series is RAID 6 (dual-parity) protection and support for 3,072 virtual devices.

The S2100-ES2 is equipped with compression to deliver double or triple the physical storage capacity without additional physical disk. Users can add the DeltaStor de-duplication software to store up to 50 times more data in the same physical space.

Jim Shocrylas, Sepaton’s director of product management, says the VTL is designed specifically for large data centers. “We’ve effectively doubled the throughput and scaled the uncompressed usable capacity to allow large enterprises to plan ahead with an architecture that will keep up with their backup requirements for the next three to five years,” he says.

S2100-ES2 Series capacity ranges from 7.5TB to 1.2PB, and performance ranges from 600MBps to 9,600MBps. A rack configuration and a stand-alone model are priced from $59,000 and $102,000, respectively.

“This announcement is really all about speeds and feeds,” says Heidi Biggar, an analyst with the Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG). “Sepaton is making sure it stays ahead of capacity and performance requirements.”

Biggar says that backup performance and capacity are critical for VTL users at large enterprises.

“As the amount of data being backed up to disk increases, capacity becomes more and more important. The more scalable or dense a system, the less hardware that needs to be managed, the less floor space that is needed, and the lower the power and cooling requirements,” says Biggar.

Asim Zaheer, vice president of marketing for Sepaton, adds that “the number-one requirement in enterprises is performance. It’s all about the ability to back up as much data as possible in a small window, and it’s also about performance restoring that data,” says Zaheer.
