—There's a new player in the world of de-duplicating virtual tape libraries (VTLs). Spectra Logic has inked a deal with FalconStor Software to add VTL and data de-duplication capabilities to the Spectra Logic family of disk-based storage appliances.

The deal, announced this week, will add FalconStor's VTL technology to Spectra Logic's line of nTier Intelligent Secondary Storage (ISS) disk products, giving thousands of existing tape library users access to global replication and data de-duplication capabilities.

Spectra Logic's nTier ISS disk backup products—the new nTier300 entry-level system and the existing 500 and 700 models—scale from 10TB to 600TB of logical capacity.

The 3U nTier300 is a remote office appliance designed to handle smaller data sets, while the nTier500 is for small- to medium-sized enterprises. The nTier700 is for large enterprises.

The bundled, pre-configured Spectra-FalconStor systems are capable of eliminating storage of redundant data on the nTier disk backup target while maintaining integration with tape archive environments.

Spectra Logic's play in a market crowded with disk-based de-duplication systems is its expertise in tape-based backup and archiving. In fact, Spectra Logic product manager Sam Bhattarai says that lack of integration with legacy tape systems is one of the common complaints he hears from VTL users.

"A large segment of the market has a need for archival tape, and that's where some VTLs are lagging," says Bhattarai. "Tape integration is critical and we can bring that to the forefront with our background in tape."

The nTier300 has a VTL interface, Fibre Channel or Ethernet connections, remote replication, and global de-duplication with an average of 20:1 data compression. Entry-level list pricing for an nTier300 with de-duplication functionality begins at $12,500. Spectra Logic also plans to offer FalconStor's enterprise solutions, which have the capability to scale beyond 1PB of logical storage.
