– Fusion-io introduced a flash memory-based OS subsystem called the ioMemory Virtual Storage Layer (VSL) this week.
According to an article by Kevin Komiega posted on Enterprise Storage Forum, the ioMemory VSL is a hybrid system that combines the block-level reading and writing capabilities of traditional I/O subsystems with the features of a virtual memory subsystem, essentially merging memory and storage.
Existing software such as file systems, volume managers and applications will be able to access ioMemory without modification, according to Fusion-io officials.
