HighGround centralizes NT storage management

HighGround Systems last week began shipping Storage Resource Manager (SRM) software, which provides a centralized Web-based storage management tool for managing distributed storage devices. HighGround is best known as the co-developer--with Microsoft--of the Windows NT Media Services (NTMS) programming interface, which will be included in Windows NT 5.0.

SRM runs on NT 3.1 and 4.0 and allows storage administrators to perform a variety of management functions, such as monitoring disk space and partitions, file aging statistics, file distribution, and disk defects. SRM also provides historical information for trend analysis.

The software only works with disk-based subsystems; versions for tape libraries and optical jukeboxes are due when NT 5.0, with NTMS, arrives sometime in the second half of next year, according to most predictions.

HighGround has a decided advantage in the Windows NT storage management market because of its close ties with Microsoft, but the initial release of SRM lacks the full feature set of existing products such as Sterling Software`s SAMS:Vantage. "SAMS:Vantage has been out a lot longer and is a more complete product, although the two packages don`t necessarily compete with each other because Sterling is going after the high end of the market," says Mark Nicolett, senior analyst at the Gartner Group consulting firm in Stamford, CT.

Windows NT storage management tools such as SRM are expected to be popular with resellers who are following the trend toward bundling more value-added software around their storage hardware solutions. HighGround sells primarily through resellers, OEMs, and distributors.

Also this month, HighGround released Media Mirror ($995), software that provides fault-tolerant backup and recovery for tape. The software allows users to create media replicas during back-up operations. Media Mirror is compatible with Seagate Software`s Backup Exec for Windows NT and Micro-soft`s Windows NT Backup.

SRM is priced at $3,995 per server license, $99 per NT workstation agent, and $399 per NT server agent. For more information, contact HighGround Systems at (508) 263-5588 or visit www.highground.com.
