Digital ships Ultra SCSI arrays

Digital Equipment last month revamped its StorageWorks RAID array family by adding support for Ultra SCSI controllers that the company claims double the performance of its existing arrays. RAID vendors such as Amdahl and MTI Technology have been implementing Ultra SCSI for some time.

Digital`s Ultra SCSI subsystems are upgradable to "second-generation" Fibre Channel via a board swap. Digital officials contend that current Fibre Channel solutions aren`t ready yet for prime time because there`s still a lot of work required at the operating system level. Examples: dynamic reconfiguration capability (which allows users to reallocate storage from host to host on the fly) and better disaster tolerance functionality. "At the operating system level, Fibre Channel solutions are still using a SCSI naming system with all the limitations, such as number of drives on the bus," says Anne Blanchard, director of worldwide marketing programs at Digital.
