SyQuest raises removable ante

SyQuest this month began shipping its 4.7GB Quest removable hard-disk drive. The company achieved the capacity boost primarily through the use of dual-stripe magneto- resistive (MR) heads. Early adopters are expected to be audio, video, and multimedia production studios for applications such as DVD mastering and editing.

The 5.25-inch drives include a 2MB cache buffer and a 68-pin Ultra Wide SCSI interface, which allows full-motion playback and real-time video streaming. At 4.7GB, the cartridges can hold the equivalent of a full-length film.

The drives are compatible with Windows, Windows NT, UNIX, and Macintosh platforms.

Suggested list price for the Quest drive is $599, including one cartridge. Additional cartridges are priced at $199. Contact SyQuest at www.syquest.com.
