Legato extends storage management software

Legato Systems last month extended its Enterprise Storage Management Architecture (ESMA) with a number of new functions, including snapshot copy, block-level backup, and high-availability failover. The extensions will be added to Legato`s NetWorker and the Java-based Global Enterprise Management of Storage (GEMS) software.

Snapshot copy eliminates the need for off-line backups by creating a point-in-time copy of data while applications continue running. Block-level backup reduces network bandwidth requirements by backing up only the portions of a file that change. The failover capability protects data in the event of a server failure.

Separately, Legato has released version 5.1 of its NetWorker storage management software. The company claims that the new version provides a 42% increase in data transfer rates for data recovery.
