STK combines RAID, tape

Hoping to expand its presence in the open systems RAID market while leveraging its strengths in tape libraries, Storage Technology is expected to begin shipments this month of its OPENstorage system. The Windows NT-compatible storage server combines StorageTek`s 9730 DLT tape library with the new 9153 RAID array, and includes the company`s NetSentry Remote security products.

Designed for NT clusters, the system`s 9153 RAID array scales from 45GB to 720GB with up to 40 disk drives (9GB or 18GB) in an OPENstack interlocking enclosure. The array has five Ultra SCSI buses, and is available with Ultra SCSI or Fibre Channel host attachments, with as much as 512MB of cache. The 9730 tape library can scale to more than one terabyte, and can be configured with StorageTek`s unannounced "Eagle" drives and cartridges.

NetSentry Remote is designed for mobile users, and provides multi-protocol remote access over any IP-capable medium, including dial-up servers, frame relay, and the Internet. The software runs on NT servers as an HP Openview Management application, controlling access to one or more servers.

An OPENstorage configuration with 90GB of RAID capacity and 360GB of tape capacity is priced at $85,000. www.storagetek.com.
