Veritas enhances NetBackup

Aiming to provide continuous data access, and claiming zero downtime, Veritas Software has beefed up its NetBackup software with a number of features, including:

- Flashbackup, which provides "hot" (online) backups by capturing images of the online file system (either UFS or the Veritas File System) and streaming the images to tape for offline storage. Flashbackup also provides file-level incremental backups by reading only the blocks that are associated with the files that have changes, and sending only those files to tape.

- Disaster recovery features (including multiplexed restores and server-independent restore) that the company claims will enable users to recover in hours as opposed to days.

NetBackup 3.1 is available for Windows NT, HP-UX, IBM AIX, and nine other platforms. Pricing starts at $8,500 per server for the Unix version, and $3,995 for the NT version. www.veritas.com.
