Quantum ruggedizes desktop drives

This month, Quantum will begin production shipments of the next generation of its Fireball desktop disk drives. The 3.5-inch Fireball EL includes Quantum`s Shock Protection system (SPS), which addresses the issue of drive reliability with a redesigned mechanical system. Available in capacities of 2.5GB, 5.1GB, 7.6GB, and 10.2GB, the drives include a 512KB buffer. Other specs include a 5,400rpm rotational speed, 9.5ms average seek time and an Ultra ATA interface. Suggested retail pricing ranges from $169 for a 2.5GB drive to $359 for a 10.2GB version.
