Panasonic ships DVD-RAM drive, media

The new Panasonic LF-D101 DVD-RAM drive is now shipping from Matushita Electric. Compliant with the DVD Forum`s DVD-RAM standard, the LF-D101 writes to DVD-RAM and PD discs and can read from discs currently accepted by DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, DVD Video, DVD-R, and PD. The unit can also read from discs accepted by MultiRead CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW, and video CD drives.

The LF-D101 has a removable rewritable storage capacity of 2.6GB per single-sided disc and 5.2GB per double-sided disc. The unit has a data transfer rate of up to 10.5Mbps and a 120ms average seek time. The drive includes a 2MB buffer to enhance performance. The product is also offered as an internal drive with a SCSI-2 interface or an ATAPI interface. Suggested pricing for the LF-D101 begins at $799. DVD-RAM media is also available. The removable double-sided 5.2GB disc is enclosed in a cartridge and is priced at $39.95. The 2.6GB disc is also sold in a removable cartridge, which is priced at $24.95.
