Polaris links DASD with NT FC RAID

Polaris Communications` Nexus Data Sharing Controller (DSCO) allows bi-directional sharing of files between mainframe DASD and Windows NT-based Fibre Channel disk subsystems. Avoiding LAN/WAN routing, the controller supports ESCON, Bus & Tag, Fibre Channel, and SCSI interconnects in storage area network configurations.

The DSCO appears to the mainframe as multiple tape drives while providing a direct connection to Fibre Channel or SCSI-based RAID arrays, using standard S/390 tape utilities and NT file system commands. DSCO is a PCI-based system that runs NT 4.0 and includes dual power supplies and two Pentium II processors, up to four ESCON or Bus & Tag channel interface, and four Fibre Channel or SCSI interfaces. The controller is expected to compete with data sharing solutions from vendors such as EMC and Sun. Pricing starts at $23,000. www.polariscomm.com.
