Western Digital fields 10GB drives

Adding to its Caviar series, Western Digital introduces 10.1GB drives with a Data Lifeguard feature that will eventually be included in all WD drives. The feature is designed to protect data by detecting, isolating, and repairing problem areas on the drive before data loss occurs. Data Lifeguard is an enhancement of self-monitoring, analysis, and reporting technology (SMART).

Features of the Caviar 10.1GB drives include a 512KB buffer, an average seek time of 9.5msec, and a 5,400rpm rotation speed. The drives support Mode 4 PIO (programmable input/output), Mode 2 DMA and Ultra DMA/33. Estimated retail price is $339.
