STK ships 9840-based library for client/server workgroups

Based on 9840 drive technology, StorageTek`s 9738 tape library is designed for workgroups and small- to mid-size businesses. STK is positioning the library as an alternative to optical systems, claiming faster throughputs and lower cost. Introduced last December, the 9840 drive stores 20GB (native capacity) per cartridge and has a 10MBps native data transfer rate and an average search time of 11 seconds.

The 9738 supports up to three 9840 drives. A fully configured system has a native capacity of up to 600GB, or up to 1.8TB compressed. The library is compatible with a variety of platforms (e.g., HP-UX, AIX, AS/400, Irix, Solaris, and Windows NT) and software packages (e.g., AMASS, ARCserve, Backup Exec, NetBackup, Networker, REEL, and Tivoli Storage Manager).

The 9738 library comes in 19- inch rackmount or desktop models. www.storagetek.com.
