Arkeia integrates backup appliances

Arkeia Software has introduced four integrated (hardware and software) backup appliance models, with improvements in disk capacity, interface support, tape options, and the company’s Network Backup v8 software.

  • Disk capacity ranges from 1TB to 10TB in RAID-1 or RAID-5 configurations.
  • Interfaces supported include eSATA, Fibre Channel, SAS and SCSI.
  • Tape options include internal Quantum LTO-3 or DAT-75 drives with Arkeia’s disk-to-disk-to-tape management software.
  • Arkeia Network Backup v8 software now supports more than 150 platforms, and has options such as LAN/WAN backup replication and backup encryption.

Pricing starts at $3,500 for a model 110 with 1TB of disk capacity in a RAID-1 configuration.

InMage targets MSPs

InMage has added a number of enhancements to its Scout disaster recovery (DR) platform designed specifically for managed services providers (MSPs).

For example, the Scout software now enables companies to manage hundreds of customers with multiple servers from a common management interface. Also as part of the centralized management functionality, InMage added multiple levels of security, including “super-user” capabilities for MSPs.

In addition, data protection processes can now be hosted on separate servers. “For example, MSPs can now accommodate much higher levels of I/O by putting software engines, which used to reside on a single appliance, on separate servers,” says Eric Burgener, InMage’s senior vice president of marketing.

InMage also added reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) enhancements to the Scout platform. For example, MSPs can implement server failover for higher availability.

“Unlike many end-user organizations, MSPs are particularly focused on things like multi-tenancy, charge-back, and maintaining secure partitions between different customers that might be running on the same backend hardware,” says Burgener.

However, it may be some of the inherent features in the Scout platform that may be of primary interest to MSPs. For example, hosted services providers can offer tiered recovery services, at different price points, by taking advantage of Scout’s continuous data protection (CDP) functionality. CDP enables varying levels (i.e., granularity) of recovery point objectives (RPO) and recovery time objectives (RTO), without the need for MSPs to go to customers’ sites, for data and/or applications.

Other core functions in the Scout platform include WAN optimization features such as compression, bandwidth shaping and TCP optimization, which offer an alternative to conventional replication products.

Scout supports heterogeneous storage devices and servers, including virtual server platforms such as VMware, Citrix and Hyper-V.

As part of the announcement, InMage named Tom Urban as director of MSP alliances.

SteelEye launches BC/DR platforms

Version 7 of the SteelEye Protection Suite (SPS) for Windows Server includes DataKeeper and LifeKeeper data replication (asynchronous or synchronous) and high-availability clustering software, WAN optimization, support for mixed virtual and physical server clusters, real-time block-level data protection, continuous data protection (CDP) with any-point-in-time rewind functionality, and automatic failover.

Atempo intros dedupe module

Atempo has added a HyperStream Server module to its flagship Time Navigator backup and recovery platform that provides block-level data deduplication functionality. HyperStream Server is a stream-oriented storage service that performs block-level deduplication across and within streams, identifying identical blocks of data on multiple systems and only backing up the changed blocks, which reduces the amount of storage and network bandwidth required. HyperStream Server also supports block-level replication from one unit to another over LAN or WAN connections.

Acronis adds data dedupe

Acronis Backup & Recovery 10 software is the next generation of the company’s True Image disaster recovery, disk imaging and bare metal restore software. Compatible with Windows or Linux platforms, the software can restore operating systems, applications, updates, settings and data. One of the new features is data deduplication. Pricing ranges from $74 to $3,171.
