-- FalconStor Software has taken its entire product line virtual with the launch of the File-interface Deduplication System (FDS) virtual appliance as part of a new VMware initiative announced this week.
The FDS virtual appliance brings software-based data deduplication to VMware backup infrastructures, and eliminates redundancies in VMDK files to reduce the amount of storage capacity necessary to support VMware backup applications.
Fadi Albatal, senior director of marketing at FalconStor, says the FDS virtual appliance is the last of FalconStor's products to be virtualized and is part of the company's push into the VMware market.
"We've completed porting all of our products to virtual appliances," says Albatal. "Putting all of our VMware work under one initiative makes it easier to support continuous availability across the data center in multi-vendor physical and virtual environments."
In addition to the FDS virtual appliance, FalconStor introduced storage management and disaster recovery product extensions for VMware vCenter and vCenter Site Recovery Manager that provide virtual machine (VM) storage provisioning as well as automated failback of remote VMs.
The new extension for FalconStor Network Storage Server (NSS) adds support for physical-to-virtual machine failover, while FalconStor Failback Manager for VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager allows VMware vSphere users to automate the failback process to a primary data center.
The FDS virtual appliance and the new extensions join FalconStor's Storage Replication Adapter (SRA), which integrates the company's replication capability with VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager, FalconStor's HyperTrac VMware, Virtual Storage Management and a range of virtual appliances as part of the company's VMware-compatible products.
All of FalconStor's virtual appliances now support VMDirectPath I/O from VMware. Albatal claims VMDirectPath I/O support bypasses the virtualization layer to improve storage access and increase the throughput of FalconStor's NSS Virtual Appliance by 10X.
