-- Western Digital has entered the solid-state disk (SSD) drive market with the acquisition of SiliconSystems for $65 million in cash. SiliconSystems specializes in SSDs for embedded systems.

-- Startup Pliant Technology has received $15 million in Series C funding. Pliant makes Enterprise Flash Drives (EFDs), which are SSDs based on the SAS interface.

-- PMC-Sierra's SRC 8x6G 6Gbps SAS RAID-on-Chip (RoC) and SXP 36x6GSec 6Gbps SAS expanders are shipping across HP's new line of ProLiant G6 servers. The  companies claim a 150%+ performance in RAID-5 write performance, and a 350%+ increase in RAID-0 read performance, compared to previous-generation ProLiant G5 controllers.

-- InfiniBand vendor Voltaire's 40Gbps InfiniBand switch, the Grid Director 4036, is available for HP Cluster Platforms based on new HP ProLiant G6 servers. The Voltaire Grid Director 4036 features 36 ports of 40Gbps InfiniBand connectivity and optimizes I/O throughput for multi-core servers to improve the performance of high performance applications.

-- Verari Systems announced that its BladeRack 2 X-Series platforms now support the next generation of Intel's intelligent server processors. Verari's VB1300 Series blade-based computing platforms offer options including the quad-core (up to 2.93GHz) Intel Xeon processor 5500 series.

-- PLX Technology and solid-state storage specialist Fusion-io have entered into a partnership under which Fusion-io is using PLX ExpressLane Gen 2 PCIe switches in its ioDrive Duo SSD product. Fusion-io also plans to use PLX's PCIe switches in its server-attached, network-shared products. A single ioDrive Duo can sustain up to 1.5GBps of raw throughput in each direction, giving the ioDrive Duo 3X the bandwidth of SATA 3 by attaching directly to PCIe using an integrated PLX switch.

-- Mellanox Technologies' 40Gbps InfiniBand server and storage connectivity products now offer a speed boost for applications that use Intel Xeon 5500 Series processors. Mellanox's networking products now provide double the performance with the new processors, compared to 20Gbps systems with precious generation Xeon processors. Mellanox's line of ConnectX 40Gbps InfiniBand adapters, MTS3600 36-port, 40Gbps InfiniBand switch system, and MTS3610 324-port, 40Gbps InfiniBand switch system are available now.
