Spectra Logic libraries scale to 180PB
November 10, 2009 -- Spectra Logic today took the wraps off a system that scales to 45PB per library, or 180PB in a library complex. Those capacities assume a library equipped with LTO-5 tape drives and cartridges, which aren't expected until April 2010.
Lab Review: Bridging the archive-backup divide
October 30, 2009 -- With the introduction of government regulations for strict archiving of particular data along with new backup technologies such as disk-to-disk backup and data deduplication, IT must now bridge that divide with a flexible archiving solution that easily integrates into current IT procedures.
Special Report: Managing tape is no longer an oxymoron
August 19, 2009 -- Tape administrators are realizing that "you can't manage what you can't measure."
Lab Review: Reducing risk via lifecycle management for backup media
July 30, 2009 -- Spectra Logic is incorporating into its tape libraries advances in data protection, including encryption key management, media lifecycle management, and automated initiation of SpectraGuard Support that go beyond incremental innovations in tape density and performance.
Thales addresses encryption key management
April 16, 2009 -- Thales this week announced the Thales Encryption Manager for Storage (TEMS) key management appliance. In contrast to proprietary key management systems, TEMS is currently based on the IEEE P1619.3 standard and will eventually support the Key Management Interoperability Protocol (KMIP) standard, which is expected to finalized by the end of this year.
LTO-4 encryption secures data
Encryption is often necessary to secure data on tapes, and LTO-4 includes drive-level encryption.
Guidelines for tape media management
Adhering to simple procedures can extend the life of your tape media and ensure data protection.
Multi-tier storage saves energy, space
July 25, 2008 -- Power, cooling, and space limitations are key issues faced by IT managers. Demand-side contributors include decreased hardware acquisition costs, sharp increases in server density, and an exponential rise in the volume of data being stored and managed.
Sun, IBM to ship 1TB tape drives
July 16, 2008 -- There is some big news in the world of tape this week -- big, that is, in terms of capacity.
Evaluating options for tape encryption
July 10, 2008 -- Given that the pressures to encrypt data at-rest are continuing to mount, and the IEEE Secure Storage Working Group is nearly finished establishing standards for disk/tape encryption and key management, it is time to revisit some operational considerations associated with planning and policy development for tape encryption.
IBM revamps tape virtualization
July 11, 2007—IBM beefed up its virtual tape offerings for mainframe environments this week with the introduction of the Virtualization Engine TS7740
Tape market update: LTO the only bright spot
May 3, 2007—Tape market research firm Freeman Reports released its Tape Library Outlook 2007 report this week, and in terms of tape formats LTO is the only growth market.
Sun, IBM tackle tape encryption
September 14, 2006—Sun Microsystems and IBM each launched new technologies for data encryption on tape drives and key management this week as a direct response to the ongoing threat of data loss and identity theft plaguing big companies and consumers across the country.
Evaluating data encryption options
In May, the names and Social Security numbers of 26.5 million US veterans were stolen from a Veterans Affairs’ data analyst when his home computer was snatched during a burglary.
Quantum to buy tape rival ADIC
May 4, 2006—Quantum announced this week its plans to acquire rival tape drive and library maker Advanced Digital Information Corp. (ADIC) for about $770 million, broadening Quantum's tape hardware and software portfolio.
Quantum expands tape line, adds disk
March 9, 2006—Quantum this week announced two new products to expand its tape line and extend its reach into disk-based backup and recovery. The DLT-S4 tape drive continues the renaming of the SDLT moniker and offers increased capacity and throughput, while GoVault is a removable disk-based device for small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and remote offices that want to simplify the backup, recovery, and archiving process.
Survey underscores shift from tape to disk
February 22, 2006—The results of a recent survey conducted by Peripheral Concepts and Coughlin Associates emphasize the ongoing shift from tape- to disk-based backup and recovery, which is being fueled primarily by users' demand for faster recovery times. The Backup and Archive User Perspective Report qualified 2,000 IT professionals for a screening survey.
Tape encryption not a security cure-all
November 30, 2005—Thanks to a few high-profile incidents of lost backup tapes recently, data security has been boiled down to a simple solution by many vendors: tape encryption. However, the storage security problem can't be solved so easily. It's about the process...
Quantum introduces WORM tape
Quantum Corp. recently announced its DLTice, claiming that it is the first widely adopted midrange tape offering with WORM technology. But there is a key difference in how Quantum has chosen to deliver WORM technology compared to other WORM tape vendors such as IBM, Sony, and StorageTek.
EMC taps ADIC for tape libraries
The company that once prophesized that tape was a dying technology has now signed an agreement with Advance Digital Information Corp. to resell ADIC's Scalar tape libraries.
