Silver Peak is giving enterprises more VRX Software options, enabling them to better align their offsite data replication capabilities with their data protection requirements.

The Santa Clara, Calif.-based wide area network (WAN) traffic optimization specialist has taken the wraps off a new edition of its Velocity Replication Acceleration (VRX) software, VRX-6. Slotting between VRX-4 and VRX-8, the new offering provides 300 Mbps throughput and averages 750 GB per hour of replication traffic, according to the company. The company's entry-level VRX-2 product is rated at 20 Mbps and 50 GB per hour.

VRX is based on Silver Peak's Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) WAN acceleration technology. VXOA offers traffic prioritization and shaping functionality, along with data deduplication tech that spares bandwidth by storing frequently repeated data on a local appliance or system running Silver Peak's software. The software powers the company's line of NX hardware appliances and can be deployed as a virtual machine.

VRX-6 runs on all major virtualization platforms, namely VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, Citrix XenServer and KVM. It provides WAN-accelerated asynchronous replication on storage infrastructures from major vendors, including Dell, EMC, Hitachi Data Systems (HDS) and NetApp, among others.

Incorporating VRX into an organization's data protection setup is a snap, boasts the company. With little in the way of networking know-how, "storage professionals can accelerate their replication traffic in under 20 minutes," said Silver Peak in a statement.

Additionally, VRX provides an upgrade path for businesses as their data storage requirements grow. "Let's face it; you are either growing (and so is your data), or you are going out of business," said Everett Dolgner, storage and replication product management for Silver Peak, in a blog post.

Admitting to "a bit of a gap between 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps," Dolgner said he was "proud to announce that the VRX-6 fills the gap nicely at 300 Mbps." He added that the company's approach "helps address the needs of growing environments without a rip and replace."

VRX-6 is available now. Prices are $18,257 for an annual subscription or $37,944 for a perpetual license. Silver Peak offers a fully supported 30-day trial to help get customers started.
