Infortrend Launches Clustered File System for HPC and Media

Infortrend announced this week that it has launched its new ESVA Cluster File System solution, which is designed around the company’s Enterprise Scalable Virtualized Architecture (ESVA), and provides support for Windows, Mac, and Linux clients.

"By delivering high-speed file access and sharing, strong computing power and reliable enterprise-class data storage, the ESVA Cluster File System is ideal for media/entertainment and HPC (High-Performance Computing) applications," according to an Infortrend statement..

Media and HPC applications present unique challenges for file systems such as the need for the ability to enable multiple users to perform non-linear edits simultaneously. They also require high-bandwidth transfer rates to support high-definition and other content as well as scalability to support expanding data growth.

The ESVA Cluster File System can support 78 streams of read capability as well as 39 streams of write capability with a frame size of 2K and a frame rate of 23.98 frames-per-second, the company's statement said.

In addition, the ESVA Cluster File System can support file capacities up to 4 petabytes, and its clustered architecture provides support for HPC read performance of up to 24,000 MB/s and write performance of 12,000 MB/s.

"This comprehensive solution enables users to record, edit, broadcast and store their content without having to piece together a solution from different vendors," Thomas Kao, Infortrend's director of product planning, said in a statement.

"HPC applications can also benefit from our solution, as it offers performance levels rarely seen in the industry," he added.

ESVA Cluster File System solutions come with ESVA storage arrays, along with a pair of metadata servers, as well as a LAN gateway server and system agents.

Additionally, storage arrays are available with three types of host connectivity. These include 8 GB/s Fibre Channel, 1 GbE iSCSI, and 10 GbE iSCSI, the company said.

Meanwhile, metadata servers provide data sharing for SAN-based systems while the LAN gateway server enables data sharing for LAN-based systems. The agents facilitate communication between clients and the servers.
