Most organizations today have implemented some level of tiered storage functionality. In most cases, this equates to mixing and matching different drive sizes and types in stand-alone disk arrays, creating internal tiers of storage. While creating physical tiers does provide some benefits, the real goal is to be able to put data on the appropriate tier at the appropriate time. Doing so ensures the right level of performance, protection, and access at the right price point.
