NovaStor is making it easier for IT managers to pluck virtual machine data from backups with the latest edition of its enterprise-grade backup product.
The Agoura Hills, Calif.-based provider of data protection software has released a new version of NovaBACKUP DataCenter. The solution includes a new feature, called Granular Item Recovery (GIR) for VMware, which as its name implies, enables administrators to zero in on data they wish to safeguard or recover.
According to the company, GIR in NovaBACKUP DataCenter 5.2 "provides backup and restore of individual files to and from VMware virtual machines." Also new for VMware are "optimized Media Pools," a time-saving feature that enables "clients to select specific items from VM backups and dictate their restore location of choice – in a single step," said NovaStor in a statement.
For Microsoft shops, NovaBACKUP DataCenter 5.2 offers support for Windows Server 2012 R2 with for vSphere 5.5, "beating competitors like Veeam to the punch," boasted the company. Support for Microsoft SQL 2014 and Exchange 2013 is standard – and not paid add-ons – reminded NovaStor.
Veeam is also a maker of backup and recovery software for VMware and Hyper-V environments. The company's product, Veeam Backup & Replication v7, features built-in WAN Acceleration that speeds offsite backups and eliminates the need for WAN acceleration appliances or additional bandwidth.
Other virtualization-aware products include Quantum vmPRO, PHD Virtual and Dell's vRanger.
NovaBACKUP DataCenter acts as a centralized backup management platform for both physical servers and virtual machines powered by Windows, Linux, VMware and/or Hyper-V. Automated processes include Data Availability Groups (DAG) in Microsoft Exchange, which allows for database-level recovery from failures.
The software can also be used for network-wide updates. "Administrators simply select which systems should be modified and launch updates at-will, saving valuable time," stated the company.
"NovaStor ensures that all of our business clients technologies are supported for reliable backup and restore," said NovaStor CEO Stefan Utzinger, in company remarks. NovaBACKUP DataCenter's feature set was influenced by customer feedback, he indicated. "Our clients work one-on-one with NovaStor backup engineers, and a support team that is familiar with their installation, and thus are able to provide fast and accurate backup solutions."
