CA adds de-duplication, SRM to ARCserve

By Dave Simpson

CA has added a slew of enhancements to its flagship ARCserve backup/recovery software and the XOsoft line of replication and high availability products, all of which fall under the CA Recovery Management umbrella.

For example, the company has added native data de-duplication in the 12.5 release of ARCserve, at no extra charge, providing an alternative to more expensive, appliance-based data de-duplication solutions.

"The main benefit of integrating data de-duplication in the backup software is cost savings," says Frank Jablonski, senior director of product marketing, "but it also makes it simpler because you don't have to add hardware."

The data de-duplication runs on a standard ARCserve backup server, and can be used in VMware, Hyper-V and XenServer virtual server environments. Other virtualization enhancements to ARCserve include a one-step file restore process for VMware vSphere and ESX, as well as Hyper-V, that eliminates the need to restore image-level backups to a staging site, according to Jablonski. CA also announced certification of virtual machine backups in Citrix XenServer environments, and enhanced dashboard reporting – including backup status and VM recovery points -- for VMware, Hyper-V and XenServer.

Also at no extra charge, CA added storage resource management (SRM) functionality to ARCserve. The SRM resource tracking/reporting features come from CA's standalone SRM software.

CA also added a number of security features to ARCserve, including password management capabilities for encryption keys, and integration of Windows authentication into the audit and role management process.

XOsoft enhancements

CA also announced a number of additions to its XOsoft Replication and XOsoft High Availability software. For example, Windows System State Protection takes periodic snapshots of production server files and stores them on the replica server for faster restores, according to Jablonski, and a Windows Registry Synchronization feature protects Windows registries and provides quicker recovery.

Other additions in the 12.5 releases of the XOsoft products include support for VMware vCenter Server and single-instance host-level replication for Hyper-V; certification of virtual-machine replication for XenServer and Citrix Essentials; replication support for Unix (AIX and Solaris) and Linux (Red Hat and SUSE); support for Microsoft SharePoint 2007; automated disaster-recovery testing; and bandwidth tuning capabilities.
