Sun launches management software, services

By Ann Silverthorn

As part of its quarterly Network Computing launch, Sun Microsystems recently announced the expansion of its storage acquisition model through the introduction of the Sun Java StorEdge Software and Suites and the Sun Managed Storage Services Program. These two additions build on Sun's high-end and midrange system subscription offerings.

The Java StorEdge Software solution can be purchased as an integrated suite or in separate modules: Consolidation, Continuity, Content, and Compliance. All software includes the main console, which allows for heterogeneous SAN management.

The suites are available in per-terabyte and per-employee pricing options. Sun anticipates a cost savings for customers of at least 30% in comparison to typical "point-product" offerings.

Expanding its managed services portfolio, Sun also introduced Sun Managed Storage Services, designed to give customers customizable ways to outsource daily storage management, provisioning, data life-cycle reporting, and SAN management. Sun's Storage Networking Industry Association-certified staff and StorEdge monitoring and management software can remotely manage any Sun customer's storage.

Benefits to customers include reduction of the risk of under-hiring or over-hiring storage management personnel and access to the full range of Sun StorEdge systems, from entry level to enterprise level.
