CommVault rounds out management suite

By Ann Silverthorn

—The introduction of IQ Ops, a software module designed for proactive data and storage operations management, marks CommVault's final announcement this quarter centered on its QiNetix 6.1 data management suite. CommVault made several announcements leading to general availability of the upgraded software suite. QiNetix 6.1 features more than 100 new features and functions.

The QiNetix platform performs backups, snapshot management, remote replication, data migration and archiving, e-mail compliance, storage resource management (SRM), reporting, and it can be managed from a single console. All of the modules in the QiNetix suite share a common foundation, the Unified Data Management platform.

The first announcement, in November, debuted CommVault's ContinousDataReplicator (CDR), a move toward continuous data protection (CDP). CDR continuously captures enterprise application changes and allows replication to remote offices (See CommVault adds data-recovery module).

The second announcement, earlier this month, introduced Data Classification Enabler (DCE), which performs information lifecycle management (ILM) functions. DCE allows companies to set policies and manage data according to the data's characteristics rather than on the location of the data. (see CommVault enhances ILM).

The third product announcement, IQ Ops, takes a proactive approach to data management. In addition to failover and load balancing, in the event of connectivity loss or device outages IQ Ops enables the restarting of software operations and processes.

IQ Ops features the CommCell Readiness check, which assesses how successful upcoming processes will be and identifies problems before they occur. The software can also match thousands of processing jobs with the device, priority, and path resources they need in which to run.

With e-support options, IQ Ops provides alerts when problems have occurred--or are about to occur. It also contains log filters so that users can find job-related information without having to wade through the entire inventory. Trouble tickets can be submitted via the Web for automated responses and faster problem resolution.

Current QiNetix customers will be upgraded to 6.1 at no additional cost. For new QiNetix customers, pricing varies based on configuration.
