NAS: Adaptec aims for the enterprise

By Ann Silverthorn

—Topping off the recently refreshed Snap Server product line, Adaptec this week introduced the Snap Server 650, which doubles the performance of the company's exiting NAS devices. The 650 scales from 1.2TB to 64.2TB.

Adaptec optimized the Snap Server 650 for applications such as video surveillance, e-mail database archiving, disk-based backup, and long-distance disaster recovery. The optimization stems from two dual-core, 64-bit AMD Opteron processors, resulting in four logical processors in the system and data throughput speeds of up to 1,045Mbps.

Base memory on the 650 scales from 2GB to 4GB. For better drive speed, Adaptec has added 15,000rpm, 300GB Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) drives.

"In addition to traditional file access, we can support a large number of backup threads from remote offices now," says Dave Porter, Adaptec's product manager. "We also have database access from application servers that are using iSCSI LUNs."

Other product line enhancements announced by Adaptec this week include the introduction of 750GB Serial ATA (SATA) drives to the Snap Server 520 and SANbloc S50 expansion modules, along with heterogeneous server support. The S50 has been qualified with the Adaptec 4800 family of controllers.

The Snap Server 650 is based on the same GuardianOS operating system as the other models in the product line and offers data-protection software that include antivirus, backup and recovery, and data replication.

The 1.2TB, SAS-based Snap Server 650 is priced from $15,695, while the SANbloc S50 JBOD expansion modules are priced from $4,431.

1TB NAS for less than $800
Also on the NAS front this week, Iomega introduced a four-drive, 1TB NAS appliance that is priced at less than $800. The StorCenter Pro NAS 150d includes hot-swap capability, SATA-II drives, and support for RAID 0, 1, or 5, as well as support for up to four printers. The appliances include a five-client license for EMC's Retrospect Express software. In addition to the 1TB version, which has 250GB SATA drives, a 2TB version with 500GB SATA drives is available for 1,499.
