Neuxpower Solutions has released a file-server version of its NXPowerLite file optimization software, which reduces the capacity requirements for Microsoft Office files on primary storage.

NXPowerLite for File Servers is a software-only data reduction solution that is optimized for graphics, including jpeg images and any image formats supported by Office (e.g., jpeg, mpeg, gif, etc.) as long as those images are embedded in Office documents (PowerPoint, Word, Excel).

The company claims that the software can reduce capacity requirements by as much as 95% in the case of image-intensive files, although Neuxpower CEO Mike Power notes that the capacity reduction typically averages 30% to 40%. In addition to reducing primary storage capacity, NXPowerLite reduces backup and restore times.

Unlike most data reduction, or capacity optimization, approaches, NXPowerLite for File Servers does not use data deduplication or compression technology (although it can be used in conjunction with data deduplication or compression software and/or appliances).

“NXPowerLite eliminates unnecessary data,” says Power, “and because we reduce files at the source, there’s no performance penalty.” In addition, optimized files do not need to be unzipped, decompressed or rehydrated before viewing.

The company claims to have more than one million users of previous (mostly desktop) versions of its data reduction software.

NXPowerLite for File Servers starts at $2,499 per server, regardless of server type or capacity.

The software has been accredited for use by defense organizations such as the U.S. Army, Air Force and Navy, U.S. Department of Defense, British Ministry of Defence and Canadian National Defence.
