HP to ship Tachyon-based HBAs

Due through the channel by the end of the year, Hewlett-Packard`s HHBA-5100A and HHBA-5101A are Fibre Channel host bus adapters for 32-bit or 64-bit PCI systems. Based on HP`s HPFC-5100 Tachyon TL controller chip, the 5100A uses a DB9 connector for twisted-pair copper connection, while the 5101A uses a gigabit interface converter (GBIC) interface.

According to Michael Dreitlein, HP program manager, the Tachyon TL hardware state machine architecture avoids embedded microprocessor performance issues, such as limited parallelism and processor cycles per second. The company claims 25,000 I/Os per second, or 90MBps, on x86 platforms. Both boards are priced at $750, and are available with drivers for Windows NT, NetWare and UnixWare.
