Traditional backup applications don’t work in virtual server environments because they:
• consume too much CPU and memory resources,
• negatively impact network I/O by clogging the LAN,
• negatively affect disk I/O (which slows down virtual machine response times), and
• consume large amounts of disk capacity (which limits recoverability).
As a result, VM backups often fail, backups have to be staggered, backup windows are extended, VM density is limited, and users are often forced to shut down VMs in order to do backups. In short, backup can be the most limiting factor in a virtual server environment.
